they are diurnal (one of only two fully-diurnal marsupials, the other being the numbat). But it is generally pretty dim under Australian rainforest, so he probably would have used flash to get the photo.

You are correct sir! Despite the look of the photo it was the middle of the day.

Would you say the Australian rainforest is darker than other rainforests?
 
the Queensland rainforests are definitely darker than southeast Asian rainforests, in my experience at least. I wouldn't know about African or Neotropical ones.
 
African Rainforests can be pretty dark.
