These fish were very carefully caught in the wild, then transported to the Rotterdam Zoo in a tank. Apparently these schooling fish are hard to catch alive and keep in captivity. Blijdorp in the past has also kept Atlantic herring (Clupea harengus) in this tank but I didn't see any last time.
