Are there two Giraffe Houses at the zoo because the herd is so large that a second building is needed to accommodate them all? Is there a separation of males and females? Are there two separate giraffe paddocks? I'm rather fascinated as I'm not sure that I've ever heard of a zoo having two giraffe houses.
Zoo keeps only baringo giraffes. Older house was built in 2002 and first giraffe was born in 2004. In this house is place for only 4-5 giraffes (also red river hogs live there). Second house was built in 2011 - maybe it was cheaper to build new than to remodel the old house?
Zoo now keeps 2,4 giraffes, probably 1,2 in each house or maybe 1,3 and 1,1? I don,t know. Paddock is common for both houses - giraffes sharing it with zebras and ostriches. During my visit older male and all females were outside. Second male was at home.
