At this point nothing has been finalized, but the zoo is active in pursuing the goal of having a world-class elephant exhibit that will be set on a piece of land that is practically an island. There is an image of a lookout tower in this photo, but that is currently a lemur island that will have to be overhauled.
We look forward to relocating the elephants between Pride of the Plains and The Downing Gorilla Forest. The exhibit will be constructed on 4.75 acres. A 1,200-foot pathway will give elephants access to indoor areas and additional outdoor acreage.
This new elephant area could include:
* the world's first walk-through elephant exhibit by way of bridges and tunnels
* hidden containment allowing for unobstructed views
* shade structures along the path providing comfort for elephants and Zoo guests
Regarding the water...That is to be a hidden barrier under the water so the elephants have access to part of the river course. There is also a boat ride that is currently being offered at the zoo in which they will eventually be able to cruise right by the elephants at play in the water. As far as funding goes it is still happening but with the current economic struggles in Wichita it is hard to raise money but they are doing a good job. Fortunately a local aircraft company just got a big contract so maybe that will help boost the economy and help get the elephant exhibit going.
