From time to time, the Zoo has held Scissor-tailed Flycatchers in the Dan Moran Aviary, but they've never been able to breed them. This is the state bird of Oklahoma!
Unfortunately, while I didn’t see any flycatchers in the aviary. I was lucky enough to see a wild individual when I first pulled into the zoo’s parking lot!
Scissor-tailed Flycatchers are wonderful birds and we're lucky to have them as our state bird! I'm glad that you were able to see at least one during your visit! They are fairly common around the edges of Oklahoma City (but rare within the city). They are present from early April through the end of October, but they'll be migrating back to Central America within a few weeks.
