Sewerby Zoo, Cavy Country almost complete 13th December 2012

I always think Cavies/Guinea Pigs make an interesting exhibit when displayed in a large group with lots of different colours. Naturally social and active by day with plenty of coming and going. Simple little creatures but a perenial favourite of mine.

Agreed! Also a fascinating natural history. I firmly believe an animal does not have to be very rare or exotic to have any educational value!

Enjoying the pictures of this place's progression!

Thank-you. It is just about ready now (no more photos as the weather has been so bad!). The shelters have had ventilation holes put in and the Guinea Pigs were going to have been moved in this morning, but there has been a delay as the shelters are a little on the dark side - I am not sure how this is to be rectified.

I wouldn't have thought they would mind that much- most Guineas have an indoor secure 'dark' area in their accomodation and I think even in the wild they take shelter in dark crevices and overhangs, don't they?

I do not really understand what the problem is, but that is what I was told. As you say I am sure they like dark, secure places.

I'm just wondering if the keeper who told me this meant the day itself was too dark to move the animals, but I am sure he said the shelters. Maybe they would have been too dark yesterday if the animals were confined in them whilst being accustomed to the new exhibit - I do not know. The adoption plaque is up though! The Guinea Pigs did look very comfortable today in one of the new sick bays.

I have checked with madgeandshane, the source of my information on the shelters, and the concern is that the Guinea Pigs previously had open-fronted shelters and so may find these a little dark. They are to have mesh windows inserted.
