Sewerby Zoo, feeding time in the walk-through aviary 24th February 2013

For residents and hangers-on.
Sewerby Zoo....

Is this an aviary or an open-topped enclosure? Moorhens are not compatible with breeding ducks -- Silver Pheasant cocks usually start attacking people eventually. Nice mixed group of waterfowl though.

It is an aviary. Last year dozens of Moorhens hatched in it and there are 20+ living in there at the moment. The Silver Pheasant has yet to attack anybody, so far in its Sewerby career though it has been attacked by aviary mates several times (this is its umpteenth home in the zoo following its arrival from the RSPCA when there was something else wrong with it) and it even survived when a Fox got into the exhibit it was sharing with a not so lucky White Eared Pheasant. That exhibit was at the end of the walk-through and the Fox also decimated the waterfowl population a couple of years ago. The aviary now has an overhang, although a Stoat did add a couple of ducks to its tally of victims (Budgies, a couple of Polytelis and a Red-masked Conure) earlier this winter.
