Sorry, I put details only on the photo of the entrance. New toilets are to be built where the hard yard pen and the zoo kitchen/examination room are i.e. the right hand side of the photo. In my childhood the kitchen/examination room was the site of pig sties, later aviaries were there and then a sick bay. The pen used to be smaller and there were stalls between it and the sties. Not that you asked for a history! (But there was also an aviary for a Green-winged (Red and Blue then) Macaw plus an Agouti on its floor in front of the sties.) The current toilets are to be transformed into the estate offices. The loss of the yard is causing disruption in the zoo of course as feed has to be stored elsewhere and the kitchen is going in the staff room (a new staff room is to be built in time) where it was until a few years ago. Various animals are having to be moved too.
Hi thanks most interesting..i have never visited Sewerby but i am very interested in its history and any other images you may have showing the layout of the zoo, cages, views etc old or new.
Hello Jack. I should be able to oblige there, although all of my photos from the 1970s and 1980s (or at least the decent ones) are currently at the zoo. I'm at work the next two days, but I should be at the zoo Friday, Saturday and Sunday so give me a few days and I'll post some photos. I do have some general ones here somewhere, but it may be easier to take some more especially as the pheasant aviaries have been altered to include "Lemur Land".
I've taken some photos today and collected my old ones (not had time to scan any yet I'm afraid), so I'll make a start with the new ones. It was not goodbye to the yard after all as it is still in use, although the public entrance is now at the other end of the zoo.
