Old bear pit in Shefield's botanical gardens. The following is from the botanical garden website; "This is a Grade II listed building, built in 1836. The Bear Pit housed two bears until the 1870's when they were removed, following an incident when a child fell into the pit and was killed"

Amazingly well preserved and I would never have been aware of its existence without this photo. It reminds me very much of the old Bear pit at the centre of the Aquarium building at Bristol Zoo.

Does anyone know of any other preserved examples of Bear pits in the UK?

What!? I never knew that. Is it an actual pit, or part of a tank? I don't recall seeing a bear pit at all in there!

Although (as a german speaking person) I'm maybe not the right person to correct a British but: Isn't the name of the city Sheffield instead of Shefield?

The whole aquarium is constructed around the original bear pit, which is now the central tank of said aquarium.

It is indeed!
