Do they have (or are they going to have) flamingos in a free flight aviary without pinioned wings? If so this is great!

@Arizona Docent I didn’t get a chance to ask any keepers this question as the ones that were around here were from other parts of the zoo. It looks like they may be confined to this area because some strategic placement of branches, but I’m not so sure they are pinioned. At least just yet.

@Arizona Docent The zoo used to have only 8 flamingos but there will be at least 30-35 in the revamped aviary. The structure opened in 1983 and after almost 40 years it was due for a revamp and I recall the aviary looking a bit tired and worn out during my last visit. The changes look really impressive and it cost the zoo two million dollars and by Omaha standards that's not a lot of money. ;) The flamingos will NOT be pinioned, like they are at 90% of American zoos, and they will be fully flighted in the 1.3 acre aviary. Having said that, the zoo hopes that by giving the flamingos a dedicated area then there will be better breeding results.
