Small Mammals House - Meerkat Exhibit

July 24th, 2010.
Where is the sand in this exhibit seriously, do all they have is the cardboard box and concrete :(

Welcome to Milwaukee mate, a zoo with an impressive animal collection but more pits, grottoes and cement enclosures than I think I've ever seen before. The zoo has not added a major animal exhibit in 18 years (other than renovations), and so it seems frozen in time!

I like how they paid a lot of attention to creating the mural on the walls, but then pretty much only gave the meerkats a few plastic pipes and cardboard boxes in the actual exhibit space. Presumably the view of the African savannah is enough to keep them entertained....

This zoo is way overdue for a major renovation, while many zoos in the US are renovating their outdate enclosure this zoo is doing what nothing?

This is only a picture of half one third of the exhibit. They do have sand in about a third of the exhibit and an off exhibit shift and another enclosure with straw/shavings for substrate. The constructive critisism is appreciated and will provide fuel for the justification of support for a major overhaul of the facility. Milwaukee has a great collection, great staff and just needs the great exhibits (and funding) to match!
