Not familiar with the American model. Does it have to hang it's wings out to dry when it's finished swimming too?
 
The American models' plumage is much darker, I believe. And yes they do dry out their wings after swimming, too. They are quite common in Florida.
 
this photo is of a female snakebird. Males are rich black with a chestnuty patch on the breast, white stripe down the side of the head from the beak (which can be seen in the female too but with much less contrast due to her overall pale plumage), and both sexes have white or whitish streaking on the wings. Male Australian snakebirds are actually darker and more attractive (in my opinion) than the American species.
