at a feeding station at the Orokonui Eco-Sanctuary just outside Dunedin.
This individual was one that was hand-raised at Orana Park in Christchurch after stoats killed the mother bird on the nest at Lake Rotoiti.
The aviary complex at the Dunedin Botanic Gardens has bred many kaka which have been released here at Orokonui. (I think the Orana Park bird was held in the Dunedin aviaries for breeding before being released here at a later date but I am not positive on that).
Observant people may notice that the South Island subspecies of kaka is very much more colourful than the North Island subspecies (N. m. septentrionalis)!
