Chlidonias

South Island Rifleman (Acanthisitta chloris chloris)

Arthurs Pass, 2007
The NZ Wrens are amongst the most primitive of passerines. There are only two extant species now - the Rifleman (with two subspecies) and the Rock Wren Xenicus gilviventris (there is already a photo elsewhere in the NZ Wildlife gallery). A further four or five species became extinct after the arrival of humans to New Zealand.
