<3 them so much, even though have only known them from photographs and not a visit in person (yet) most definitely some of my personal favourite individual Rhinos in the world
@steveroberts It’s great to see Auckland Zoo breeding successfully after their struggles throughout the 2000’s to form a cohesive herd. Just six months after the birth and all four rhinos are successfully integrated. The two young females are very close to each other - every time I visit, they’re with each other.
Auckland Zoo definitely have 'my vote' when it comes to how they look after their White Rhinos, and as a city zoo that is quite rare personally to approve of White Rhinos being kept at one in this day-and-age..but Auckland Zoo definitely seem to look after and accomodate for their Rhinos very very well
@steveroberts Auckland Zoo have a decent sized exhibit now they’ve expanded into the adjoining Common hippopotamus exhibit. Their breeding results are especially impressive given they bred a 1.1 pair. From what I’ve seen throughout Australasian zoos, this species breeds better when the females are held in small herds.
It’s staggering to think Auckland Zoo once ran five rhinoceros in four groups in this exhibit (before the expansion). It’s very beneficial they now have a cohesive herd, meaning all four rhinos can be on exhibit.
