Spectacled bear 'Franka'

Posing nicely. Chester, 15th October
If all spectacled bears had markings as distinct as this one, they would never have tried to change their name to andean bears. :p

It is amazing just how variable this species' markings can be. I am getting used to referring to this animal as being "Andean Bear" but it doesn't come easily.

And don't get me started on Red-crowned crane....

Red-crowned crane  . . . ah, you mean tancho (showing off one third of my Japanese vocabulary :D).

I'm much too old to use new-fangled names - my pet hate is 'Philippine eagle'.

I think she is the only Spectacled Bear I've ever seen with such complete Spectacle markings, though they are always depicted as one end of the spectrum on the 'various facial markings' information boards usually located at Spectacled Bear exhibits.

Do you know if Chester do a postcard of 'Franka'?

It was 100% of my Japanese...:o

The horribly PC "Bali Starling" and "Baringo Giraffe" both rattle my cage.

There's no logic to it, I know. "Great One-horned rhinoceros" makes more sense than "Great Indian", but I'll never get used to it.

Not a fan of Baringo giraffe - but Leucopsar rothschildi will always be a Bali starling to me, simply because that's the first name I'd heard associated with them.

It usually tends to be a case of the first name I hear sticks, same with Philippine eagle

Sorry guys, just the way I roll :p

That's fair enough, it's how a language evolves.

Hands up who calls Macroscelidea elephant shrews and who uses sengis ? :)

Elephant shrew, but because I tend to use it few times and far between admittedly the odd use of sengi has come up in the past but not as often.

I still usually use flying lemur over culago as well :)
