This exhibit held primates for many years (Allen's Swamp Monkeys and Colobus Monkeys) but those two species are now gone from the zoo. Oregon has THREE otter species and the zoo has removed the netted roof to this exhibit and so I suppose that an otter/primate mix is currently out of the question.
I have always been shocked that spotted-necked otters got somewhat established in the U.S. when in Europe and even South Africa they've struggled to do so. I think it mostly stems from a lack of interest from European zoos - Why spend more to have a larger, spottier ASCO, right? The last captive breeding group of spotted-necked otters in South Africa was sent to Spain, from where the entire European population stems.
Would anybody happen to know where the spotted-necked otter population in the US comes from and which zoo originally imported them?
