10 July 2010. An endemic wrasse of New Zealand. The generic name [i]Notolabrus[/i]means southern wrasse (the former genus it occupied was [/i]Pseudolabrus[/i] which means false wrasse). The common name comes from the black marking on the flank.

10 July 2010. An endemic wrasse of New Zealand. The generic name Notolabrus means southern wrasse (the former genus it occupied was [/i]Pseudolabrus[/i] which means false wrasse). The common name comes from the black marking on the flank in the shape of a single spot, athough in larger males such as this one the spot breaks up into a series of smaller markings.
