Starling

common uk starling
Beautiful colours, and unfortunately not so common these days.

There was a time when the zoo had a huge starling problem, they used to roost in the willow trees in the islands adjacent to the Fountain Lawn and were such a pest that all the trees were pollarded in an attempt to persuade them to move on. Which they did, about as far as the old orang house, where the young used to roost in their droves. There were times that the scarlet ibis in the old aviary on the east side of the orang house could hardly be seen amongst a sea of juveniles.

OK, more info than you needed... ;)
