This aviary had housed injured bald eagles since 1994, when the award-winning "Northern Trail" area opened to the public. Now the zoo has placed the bald eagles off-exhibit and a pair of Steller's sea eagles (from Los Angeles Zoo) were unveiled on January 13th, 2011. Woodland Park hopes to breed the pair, and including the male and female in Seattle there are only 17 Steller's sea eagles in North American institutions. The only difference to the exhibit, apart from the signage, is the fact that there is now a barrier between the public and the eagles. In the past there wasn't a separation, but now a fine wire covering has been erected in the aviary.
