Seems you're right. I missed that the male didn't have the white spot behind his eyes that Penelopides panini has. They were both labeled as being in the same exhibit but I suppose I only saw Penelopides exarhatus. How do you know the subspecies, though?

Penelopides panini male is black and white bird. It looks completely different than those on your photography. Much easier to have mistaken a female panini with exarhatus.
South Sulawesi Tarictic Hornbill (P.e.sanfordi) male has yellow stripes across base of lower mandible. Male North Sulawesi Tarictic Hornbill (P.e.exarhatus) has black patch at base of lower mandible.
They're housed in a large mixed aviary that spans both floors of the bird house. While the other residence often change, I've seen Green Junglefowl, Victoria Crowned Pigeon, Raggiana BOP, and Falcated Teals in here.
