Sumatran orang utan Oscar 1990

I may have a colour photo of Oscar somewhere, but this B & W shot came to hand. There are a couple of my photos of Oscar as an infant in the Bristol Gallery, but this one shows what a handsome fellow he became. He was the father of the current females, Emma and Subis. Ape House, Chester, 31st May 1990. Scanned from an XP1 negative.

Continuing the nostalgia theme...

I do wish that somewhere else in UK had taken him from Chester and then added females, so we could ultimately have seen another Sumatran group somewhere in the UK.

Indeed; considering how much more enjoyable Sumatran are to watch when compared to Bornean, this is indeed something of a missed opportunity.....

Considering their higher exhibit value and the fact there are approx less than a third the number of Sumatrans left in the wild than Borneans, its odd how skewed the UK orangutan population is in favour of the latter. It wasn't always quite so- Bristol and Twycross kept them, with singles(part of mixed pairings) in the past also at London, BelleVue/Flamingo Park/Colchester(one and the same animal!) and Dudley too.
