This may be a bit random but I couldn’t help notice the pink trousers. Were these part of Bristol’s standard issue uniform at the time?
 
I can't swear to this, because I usually concentrate on the animals rather than the keepers :), but I think so.

Yep, the lovely maroon trousers (Those in the pic are a bit faded..) were zoo uniform until just after I started in 1996.
 
was she allowed to just stroll about?

Not really. She was generally held by the hand but would happily walk along upright, even when she was carrying an infant. Very unnatural to see but it would have provided some diversion for her.

The young female Gorilla 'Diana' was sometimes taken out(seperately of course) too.
