This exhibit was built in 2006 to accomodate the breeding of Sumatran tiger. The male tiger, Oz, was housed in this exhibit following his arrival from Tel Aviv Zoo in 2006; with the female tiger, Molek, housed in the pit after she arrived the same year. The pair produced Auckland Zoo’s first litter of Sumatran tiger cubs in 2008.
A raceway connected it the old exhibit (a refurbished 1922 lion pit). This allowed the tigers to travel between the two exhibits, until the demolition of the pit in 2018. This exhibit will be retained ahead of the construction of the new South East Asian precinct.
