The partial skull of "Susie", an Asian elephant from the "Nanaimo Zoo", on display at the Beaty Biodiversity Museum at the University of British Columbia.
The "Nanaimo Zoo" the display refers to is likely Hertel Zoo, a menagerie owned by German immigrant Paul Hertel originally located in Port Alberni on Vancouver Island. The zoo was relocated to Nanaimo in the late 1950s and not long after, one of the lions, a juvenile lioness named "Fury", escaped the property and mauled an 8 year-old girl to death. Information beyond that is limited but from what I could gather, Hertel only ever owned one elephant, a female Asian elephant named "Susie" who died in 1961 at only around 11 years old.
