The place where the world's very first captive elephant was born! Very nice photos of Ecoparque BA @twilighter! It is sad to see such a historical zoo give up basically all of its former collection, but that's the right decision, as these beautiful strucutres aren't the best for their inhabitant's welfare.
@Velas Thank you! Very intresting fact, thanks for sharing Some of the buildings are still in use and I believe that many can be re-used for small animals.
@twilighter You're welcome! If you d'like to learn more about the zoo's history, I reccomend checking the Buenos Aires Zoo thread, some very interesting pieces of its history were shared there recently.
Yes, and I'm actually liking what they're doing there. Shifting from the enormous exotic collection into keeping and rehabilitation only native species is a very clever way of not only helping to bring back some species into Argentina's wildlife, but also a way to fight back the huge anti-zoo movement in the country.
@Velas I will definitely check the thread I also found great book online dedicated to BA zoo history.
There's a list of species kept at the zoo and some very intresting animals are mentioned:
@twilighter Very nice! I believe that I know which book you're talking about, and it contains all of the species previously kept there, which is amazing, as it is full of rarities, specially on the regards of South American zoos (definitely rivaling São Paulo's!)
And a small correction, they didn't actually acquire Forest elephants, because the two animals kept there were L.africana x L.cyclotis hybrids.
