The African Valley

Opening with animals (Zebra, a few Antelope species, Ostrich to start with) at Easter, with more development in the future, such as more species, a second viewing area near the leopards and a tour ride running through the paddock. At time of uploading it's holding the waterbuck herd in a fenced off area. October 2008.

How large is this paddock? Nice photo!

This is only about half of the valley itself. In total, I'd say about 75 acres.

And is it all the open, grassed bit, or will it include the wooded area? I'm guessing this picture is taken from the new cafe - is that correct? And what sort of barrier is there - is it the traditional Marwell fence, or something less obtrusive? Can the waterbuck be seen yet? And any idea what other antelope species will be in there?

Thanks!

The entire valley is grassland, and does not include the woodland. Yes, this was taken from Cafe Graze, and until the viewing area is opened at Easter is the only place you can currently look out onto the valley from. The fence is a high green chain link, designed to blend in with the trees. Yes, the waterbuck can be seen by the public. When it opens at Easter, Zebra, Ostrich and Gemsbok will have access, with more species like the rest of Marwell's Savannah antelope, Giraffe and a couple of new species joining as time goes on. I've even heard the white rhinos may move up there eventually.
