@Mr Gharial I think it's likely large tyrannosaurs retained sparse amounts of fluffy protofeathers, much like modern giant terrestrial mammals keeping some hair.
Also, the stark black eyes were inspired by those of the harpy eagle, another large predatory dinosaur with excellent eyesight...
