Photo taken at the Magdeburg Museum, a museum near the centre of the city that features both cultural history and natural history galleries.
This mounted skeleton is infamous for being the worst such mount in the world, but I would argue it is the best. Certainly, it is the only reason that I chose to visit the Magdeburg Museum during my two hours in the city, so publicity is evidently good!
The bones were discovered in 1663 and consist mainly of an unknown woolly rhinoceros species, but some bones are more likely to have belonged to a mammoth. They were rather randomly and carelessly strung together into a shape that, at the time, was thought to be the most plausible one, vaguely resembling some mythical creatures. It has of course aged poorly, but even still, the Museum proudly display the Unicorn as the introduction to the natural history gallery!
