The rock dens

These dens are all found in a long row going downhill, generally called "carnivore row" - this enclosure is the topmost of the true rock dens, but is next to a larger enclosure which holds 1.1 Sumatran Tiger.

It has been a while since my last visit, and they often swap around what is in each enclosure, but as of last summer this was the enclosure which held 0.1 Tibetan Golden Cat, with 1.0 of the subspecies held at the very bottom of carnivore row. In the intervening enclosures there are currently 1.1 Amur Leopard, 1.1 Jaguar, 1.1 Wolverine and 0.1 Clouded Leopard - although the plan is for the Amur and Wolverine to leave for Highland Wildlife Park shortly, and for the rock dens to be refurbished to give the remaining species more space.

Three cats in three seperate enclosures, actually :P for a total of 2.1 cats held. One of the cats is not on carnivore row.

1.1 of them are siblings, with the remaining 1.0 being a recent arrival. The plan, I believe, is to try introducing them when the rock dens are refurbished.

Great news! I am trying to rearrange my April Europe trip to fit in Edinburgh Zoo and Highland Wildlife Park. I think this confirms the decision. (Will skip the golden cat at Thrigby Hall - my original plan - and do this instead).

If you have success in doing so, let me know when you aim to do Edinburgh and I shall see if I can get there!

Depending on when they move the Amur Leopards, and whether the long-delayed move back onshow of their Margays happens, there is a potential for you to see 7 feline taxa at Edinburgh - Tibetan Golden Cat, Asiatic Lion, Sumatran Tiger, Amur Leopard, Clouded Leopard, Margay and Jaguar - and a further 3 at Highland Wildlife Park - Scottish Wildcat, Pallas Cat and Amur Tiger. It's a shame neither collection has Snow Leopard, or else they would have the full big cat set between them.

This will be quite a plateau when the dens are gone, i take it the former Pallas cat enclosure at the end will stay, what is currently in there?

Do you mean at the bottom of the hill? This did hold (hybrid) Scottish Wildcats last year, I believe.

no, between the rock dens and the smew (former rockhopper) enclosure, it also previously held ring tailed coatimundi.
