Many of the mammals and birds in Sri Lanka are divided into subspecies (or sometimes even split as full species) depending on the climatic zone they inhabit - wet-zone, dry-zone, montane, etc. The Three-striped Palm Squirrel is sometimes divided into numerous subspecies on the island but there doesn't seem to be good grounds for that in this particular species, so I follow the "one subspecies" treatment.
