Thresher shark breaching

Lyme Bay, English Channel, 15th June 2018
We saw no dolphins on a dolphin-watching trip: but the highlight was this large thresher shark breaching five times. It leapt vertically, coming entirely out of the water. Unfortunately this image was the only good one I got, showing the shark falling back into the water: if it is viewed at full size, it shows what I think is a lamprey, attached to lower edge of the upper lobe of the caudal fin (which is as long as the body in this remarkable species). I think the shark was breaching to try to detach this parasite.
