The pool is enormous--probably the biggest for polar bears anywhere, but the concrete moat wall with sharp inward-pointing iron spikes does remind one you are in formerly-totalitarian East Germany.

I'd agree that the spikes are unattractive, but of course this is only to the disadvantage of the human visitor; as far as the polar bears go, a few spikes make no difference at all.
Yes, but the Tierpark (like all public zoos) exists--first and foremost--for people to experience animals. Iron spikes send an inappropriate and negative message. But yes,the bears could care less......
