The sign under the photo reads: Babe was an Asian elephant, arriving at the Toledo Zoo in 1912 at the age of 36. He was on exhibit at the old Walbridge Park property, mainly cared for by keeper Lou Scherer (pictured). During his tenure at the Zoo, Babe was the largest elephant in captivity, weighing over 10,000 pounds and standing over 10 feet tall at the shoulder. Babe died on October 24, 1943, and his skull has remained in the Zoo collection since that day.
