Uromastyx : Chester Zoo : 06 Sep 2025

Uromastyx spp. Location: Heart of Africa (Hidden Savannah). One, or both, of the two signed species in this exhibit, namely: Uromastyx aegyptia (also known as: Egyptian spiny-tailed lizard) and/or U. geyri (also known as: Geyr's spiny-tailed lizard, Sahara mastigure, etc).
This is a very nice photo and I think there might have been a third species of lizard in the exhibit. The lizard on the left has a head shape that is not very Uromastyx-like. I think it might be one of the Stellagama (now Laudakia) species like the Starred or Rough-tailed Agama (Laudakia stellio). I'm not an expert on either group of lizards, but just a thought.

Thanks @Summer Tanager - and you may well be correct, as 'Starred agama' (signed as Laudakia vulgaris) is one of the other two lizard species in this exhibit (the fourth being Smaug mossambicus).

Thanks for the heads-up; I'm most definitely not an expert :p - I was going by the photo on the signage at the exhibit, and neither of these two look anything like the signage photo of the agama (at least, not to my eyes! :)). However, I've since found a few photos (of L.vulgaris, and of L.stellio) online, which look much more like the individual on the left.

I have another photo of the same pair - shot from the front - which I may post in the gallery. It may help you (or others) nail the ID.
