C C condor 17 Sep 2013 great shot but the species involved is quite a bit bigger: Verreaux's eagle-owl.
lintworm 18 Sep 2013 Scops owls are really tiny owls this Bubo lacteus is about the biggest African owl
Hix 18 Sep 2013 I've checked my book again, and I originally ruled out Verreaux's because the book says it has light barring across the chest and belly. But then I read a description of the vocalisations of the two species, and what I heard that night sounds more like the Eagle Owl than a Scops. Thanks for the help!
