You can see the construction zone of Elephant Trails in the background. This otter exhibit is huge for such a small but active species, with lots of varied terrain and a deep pool. A stream winds through the entire habitat, and it is probably close to being the best otter exhibit in North America.
I´d like to take the opportunity to compliment you once again, mbweo8, on another superb set of pictures! Just like the set from Kansas City, this batch of photos encouraged me to further explore the zoo in question - this time The Smithsonian National Zoo.
Some parts of it were known to me before. The obviously magnificent and rather new Asian part of the zoo, the work on a forthcoming and so much better elephant exhibit as well as the the now rather outdated exhibits for tigers and lions.
But this set of pictures of yours showed me a great number of very interesting and certainly above-average exhibits that had escaped my attention. Perhaps not award winning but still very good ones. Very, very interesting!
I guess the point that I am trying to make that I happen to be more interested in pictures showing animal enclosures/exhibits than the individual animals although I fully appreciate that other forumsters may think otherwise.
But just like snowleopard (The Undisputed No 1 Photographer on ZooChat), you seem to strike a nice balance between these two sides of zoo photography!
That is really outstanding! I was there when the new Asia section was under construction (and not very impressed with the zoo), but I really want to go back to see this area. Probably wait until after the elephant area is done.
