there are some pheasants (grey peacock, edward's and vietnamese) and some other stuff, but its always changing. There may be the pond herons in here, the crowned plover were in here for a while. Kookaburra maybe...
Seriously - what is unacceptable about this? There's nothing wrong with them - they're simple aviaries. What about them suggests a lack of care, particularly?
Not every zoo exhibit can be shiny and perfect - in fact I'm beginning to wonder how you get on with going to zoos as your levels of what is acceptable appear to be so unrealistically high.
Why is it a crime to be ordinary???
I don't mean to come across as antagonistic, but it's getting a little frustrating to find the same comments on every picture of a zoo exhibit that doesn't meet your 'Golden Standard', which seems to be most of them.

The lack of even basic carpentry skills, together with the use of a mesh than obscures far more than it reveals, says "shoddy" to me. Again, if this was simply an off-exhibit space in a private breeder's backyard, fine, but as a public display it diminishes and demeans its inhabitants.
At least the Colchester exhibits provide clear viewing and the sense that someone is at least trying to create an interesting experience for the visitor, although the "theming" results are over-the-top and often garish.

But unacceptable? That's a very heavy criticism to pass on something so ordinary. The mesh is very tight, yes. The overlap cladding is perhaps not as attractive as it could be. But I cannot see how that could possibly lead you to brand this 'unacceptable'.
This is relatively small, privately-run zoo dependent on income from visitor expenditure to keep it going. It is in a rural area surrounded by mid-sized and not especially wealthy former industrial towns. It supports a superb collection of birds and has a very good breeding record. And, oh dear, it has a few older aviaries that aren't quite up the standards of Woodland Park, Rotterdam or even London. So let's lay into it and describe it's exhibits as 'unacceptable' and 'shoddy'?
Please consider that not everywhere has the money to keep every single exhibit up to some mythical standard of perfection and that sometimes something average is fine. It's not harmful. No-one is going away from this thinking, 'those pheasants must be rubbish and worthless, after all, they only had those little wooden aviaries'. 'Unacceptable' to me is something cruel, or unsafe or unhygienic. It's not for something that merely looks a bit old.
Keeping them in captivity implies a duty to provide the best care and to "do right by them," importantly including the message being sent to viewers about the level of care and respect given to the animals as evidenced by how they are presented. This exhibit fails at the latter.
Actually life is good, and I enjoy nothing more than seeing good zoos and good zoo exhibits (of which there are many). I cannot look at all the poor stuff that keeps cropping up on this site without commenting on it--I'm all for free speech, and if you don't like my opinions, fine....no need to be "frustrated."
