Is this home to the pair from Chester?
No the Chester pair have gone to paignton but are currently being held off-show,in fact I'm not even sure if they will go on-show at Paignton,London got their pair at the same time as Chester, both pairs came from the Crocodile Zoo in Denmark!

are these the only Crocodilian species on display in the London zoo reptile house? Do they still have the chinese alligator? what species have been kept in the past?:)

This is the only species currently on-show,in the past I have seen Chinese Alligators,Nile Crocodiles and Cuviers Dwarf Caiman in London, but in the past I believe they have also had Mugger and American Alligator.
I Believe the Chinese Alligators are no longer at London Zoo.

..... what species have been kept in the past?:)
Over the years, I've seen many different species of crocodilian at London Zoo:-

  • Nile crocodile
  • Siamese crocodile
  • American crocodile
  • estuarine crocodile
  • mugger
  • Morelet’s crocodile
  • Johnston’s crocodile
  • African long-nosed crocodile
  • West African dwarf crocodile
  • False gharial
  • American alligator
  • Chinese alligator
  • Spectacled caiman
and doubtless a few others that I’ve forgotten.

Indeed, I suspect that there are very few species of crocodilian that have not been kept at London Zoo at sometime during its history.

but in the past I believe they have also had ..... American Alligator.

The American alligators were sent to Thrigby Hall around the time of the closure crisis. I believe that some of these animals had been at London Zoo since the mid nineteen forties.

TIM, why was the decision made to send the American alligator away? Were they the only crocodilians there during the crisis? And do you know what happened to the chinese alligator? I believe they were kept in the lubetkin pool for a while :)

I think the decision to send the American alligators to Thrigby Hall was just part of the general reduction of the collection that happened around this time; it also provided more space for the Chinese alligators which were still there then.

Yes, you’re right; the Chinese alligators were kept outside in the old Lubetkin Penguin Pool for a while. I’m not sure where they were sent to.
