We also commented on the fact they used a photo of a poorly-stuffed animal to illustrate the Javan Tiger when there *are* extant photographs of living animals

Yes, the b/w one of a Javan by Hoogerworf(? spelling) is the best known, but maybe it would not blow up very well for this signpost. There are some Zoo postcard ones also. I thought this was quite a good signage actually.
