a bird of paradise endemic to the Moluccas (between Sulawesi and New Guinea). Named after Alfred Russel Wallace who discovered the species in 1858 on Bacan (although he never saw the bird alive himself, the specimen having been brought to him by local hunters). The species was then not seen again until Walter Goodfellow discovered the Halmahera race in 1926. It has since then only been rarely seen although it appears to be common within its limited range. Now that Halmahera has become more visited by birders there are more sightings and the display trees are well-known - you just need the money to get there!
