wapiti fleeing train

I was photographing these American elk resting and foraging in the snow near Grand Canyon village. Then I heard the train whistle and knew the tourist train that was parked in the village would be heading my way. (The train runs from the village to the city of Williams). So I moved back and down towards the tracks to get in position and waited for the train to approach, forcing the elk to get up and come my way.

I have no idea - they are whatever locomotives the Grand Canyon Railroad uses.

Since you are a train buff you would love my loft. It is a former ice factory right on the trains tracks - they go literally next to my back window. The downtown passenger train depot is half a mile west of me and the freight train yard is half a mile east of me. A week and a half ago an old friend of mine was here with Ringling Bros circus (he is a stage hand) and after a tour of the arena I drove him back to the freight yards where there train was parked and got a tour of his car (and his very tiny room).

For Zoogiraffe and all the other train buffs out there, this was outside my window today. I have never seen one like it before and have no idea what it is. Some kind of locomotive with test equipment?

Its a type of vehicle for checking the ride quality of the rails so that the maintenance crews no which section need work.
