Watani Grasslands Reserve - Map

August 3rd, 2010.
The 7-acre African elephant exhibit is home to 7 elephants, and in my opinion is the best elephant habitat I've ever seen. Adjacent to the huge enclosure is an almost 40-acre mixed-species field that is larger than many zoos of the world, but the numerous rhinos, ostrich and hoofstock can be difficult to locate in such a wide expanse of grass. One of the highlights of this area is the elephant tracking station, as there is a full-sized helicopter that can be climbed into, as well as many educational graphics inside what resembles a large garage.

Does this exhibit still rank #1 for you for African elephants?

Definitely, even though I've heard positive comments relating to Birmingham Zoo's all-bull complex. North Carolina is a zoo with very few flaws, but expect to be tired from a long day of walking. :)

It's planned out for my second day of my mini vaca so I can be there as long as they are open. I am aware of the walking, but I won't let my husband know. ;-)
