A poor photo, but slightly better than I have managed before. Two shrews were active while I was watching, but they are so hard to photograph. Back from the Brink section, Slimbridge WWT, 21st August 2013

I do not think it occurs on many zoo grounds.... Water shrews are animals with quite specific needs (lots of water etc.) and have large home ranges for such a small animal...
I see them quite often, in one of my gardens, I can spend ages watching them if the owner is out, they travel along a shallow stream that connects a string of ponds in the garden.
I always think it is amazing when they break the surface and the hair springs up as dry as dust.
Doing my dissertation on these. Only this morning, after over a month of trying I managed to get a camera trap film of what was almost certainly a water shrew (previously it had just been wood mice). Other than that, I'm having to rely on droppings to work out if they're around. So I've pretty much given up on having as good a view as this.
