Were you guys ever able to get into the national park proper or was it shut down the whole time that you were in Florida? I hope that the idiocy of the U.S. Congress didn't dampen your trip.

The national park was closed the whole time we were there - we drove along the northern edge of the park but didn't attempt to get any further in. It didn't really affect us that much - the plan put together by my Florida-resident friend for birding was always much more based in the western, non-National Park, half of the Everglades/Big Cypress system in any case. Even had it been open we probably wouldn't have spent more than half a day in the park.
Of course, the Big Cypress National Preserve was technically closed as well, but that didn't seem to be stopping people so we didn't let it stop us!
(it did keep places quiet though, which was nice!)
