White-backed Magpie (Gymnorhina tibicen hypoleuca) at Zoo Berlin - 6th Apri

The strange and almost robotic call of this unusual species - unrelated to the true magpies, or to corvids in general - is doubtless a commonplace and almost *dull* experience for our Antipodean fellows on Zoochat. However, for those of us in the Northern hemisphere this taxon is always fascinating to watch.

their call is indeed commonplace "down under". The species is introduced in NZ and not much liked :p

(I quite like their call myself, although the birds themselves can be an annoyance).

I suspect that were they to be introduced into the UK, they would be equally disliked :p but I also suspect my soft spot for them would remain.

It's also a warning sound during spring. Australian magpies are very protective and every Australian knows to keep an eye out for nesting magpies when they're walking through a park during breeding season.
