I wonder how much of the year it cant be occupied owing to ice, I imagine some zoos agitate the water to prevent freezing as well.

@DelacoursLangur Here in the low countries it's not all that often that it would be cold enough for moat water to freeze over. In the current winter it's only happened a few times, and then usually only at night and in the morning. That said, some zoos do prevent freezing. I've seen some zoos using bubblers and other techniques to keep moats open.
