White-lipped peccaries, 9th July 2019

Five years after I took this photo, the entire herd of White-lipped peccary were transferred to Dartmoor Zoological Park where they are still the only individuals of their kind in the UK.

While not a massively popular species, it's a shame these have left as I feel like Dudley could have found a new space for them. Personally, I would've emptied the South American paddock (next to the Giant anteater) and moved the peccaries in there after some minor adjustments.

Their old enclosure (and the one adjacent that used to hold the Reindeer, which have moved to the former Bear ravine) is being transformed into a new exhibit for African wild dogs. And while I get that some people are excited for these canines to come back, I am not a fan of this decision as I feel the combined space would be better suited for their smaller Asian cousins - the Dhole.
