Credit goes to zoospud for spotting this one! My second wild Great Bittern (and the first since 2004) and my first wild water rail in one weekend. Not too shabby!
I have visited Slimbridge four times this winter, but never spotted a bittern . . . until today but from the Holden Tower rather than the Zeiss hide. It didn't stay long enough for me to get my long lens on the camera, but I'm well pleased just to get a clear sighting.

There are currently several(3?) at Blashford Lakes in Hampshire. I saw two yesterday, both only yards from the same hide. They were both fishing, peering into the water with eyes close to the surface. One caught a fish and also 'skypointed' when people walked past on the nearby footpath. Only my 2nd Bitterns ever, and by far the best views.
