Yala National Park, Sri Lanka. July 31 2018. There are groups of both feral and wild water buffalo in Yala NP. After encountering many feral ones we finally found a group of wild buffalos.
Where are you getting the information for Wild Water Buffalo at Yala? The only "evidence" I've seen is from Groves who used cranial measurements. Even if there were genuine wild animals at the park once, the sheer number of feral and still-domestic buffaloes there would have swamped them long ago.
As far as I'm aware the only possible true Wild Water Buffalo left in Sri Lanka are in the highlands (where there is a small area free from ferals), but even those are questionable given that there's a very strong possibility that all Water Buffalo on the island are descended from imported domestic stock.
